Through the Eyes of University Students

سمات الشخصية: من خلال عيون طلاب الجامعة
تناولت هذه الدراسة تصورات طلاب الجامعة لصفات الشخصية. شملت العينة 200 طالب تم اختيارهم بشكل عشوائي من "الجامعة اللبنانية الدولية". كان الهدف هو استكشاف وجهات نظرهم حول سمات الشخصية والعلاقة بين هذه القيم في تعزيز مناخ إيجابي أو سلبي لتنمية المواطنة. هذه الدراسة الكمية، استخدمت استبيان Bulach’s Character Instrument (2000). تتألف أداة المسح المكيفة من 82 عنصرًا تم استخدامها لقياس تصورات الطلاب لسلوك أقرانهم على 14 بُعدًا للشخصية. تم استخدام (SPSS-22) لحساب المتوسط والانحراف المعياري للنتائج لتحديد تصورات طلاب الجامعة حول سمات الشخصية. تم استخدامPearon Product Moment لتحديد مدى ارتباط التصورات الإيجابية أو السلبية بتعليم الشخصية بالمفاهيم الإيجابية أو السلبية للمواطنة. تشير النتائج إلى أن الطلاب اللبنانيين لديهم تصورات منخفضة حول وجود سلوكيات نموذجية لكل سمة شخصية، مع وجود ارتباط كبير بين سمات الشخصية والمواطنة. بناءً على هذه النتائج، تم تقديم اقتراحات حول كيفية توظيف وجهات نظر الطلاب من قبل مسؤولي الجامعة وأعضاء هيئة التدريس لتحسين تجسيد وتعليم الشخصية والمواطنة بشكل أفضل لتجهيز الخريجين ليس فقط للنجاح في مكان العمل ولكن أيضًا للمزج بفعالية كمواطنين أخلاقيين في مجتمعاتهم ووطنهم والعالم.
Abstract: This study examined university students’ perceptions of character traits. The sample included 200 randomly selected students from the Lebanese International University. The purpose was to explore their perspectives of character traits and the correlation between these values in fostering a positive or negative climate for citizenship development. This quantitative study, employed Bulach’s Character Instrument, the Selected Character Values and their Corresponding Behaviors (2000). The adapted survey instrument consisted of 82 items used to measure students’ perceptions of their peers’ behavior on 14 character dimensions. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS-22) was used to calculate the mean and the standard deviation of results to determine the perceptions of university students on character traits. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was utilized to determine the extent to which positive or negative perceptions of character education are connected to positive or negative perceptions of citizenship. Findings suggested that the Lebanese students have some rather low perceptions about the presence of behaviors that are typical of each character trait, with a significant correlation between character traits and citizenship. Based on these findings, suggestions are made as to how university administrators and faculty can employ their students’ perspectives to better materialize and advance character and citizenship education to equip their graduates not only to succeed in the workplace but also to blend effectively as moral citizens of their societies, nation, and the world.
