The Human Decision between Conscious Awareness and Illusion:

A Critical Reading of Storrs McCall’s Philosophical Project

المستخلص - Abstract:

يعالج البحث إشكاليّة القرار الواعي في ضوء التوتر القائم بين وعي الإنسان باختياره وبين احتمال كونه مجرّد إيهام ناتج عن بنية سببيّة وحتميّة تحكم العالم الطبيعي.

ينطلق البحث من السؤال المركزي الآتي: هل يمكن الدفاع فلسفيًّا عن قرار إنساني واعٍ ومسؤول في عالم تحكمه القوانين الطبيعيّة؟ وإذا كانت أفعاله مشروطة بقوانين سابقة عليه، فبأيّ معنى يمكن مساءلته أخلاقيًّا وتحميله مسؤوليّة ما يفعل؟

يشكّل البحث محاولة فلسفيّة لفحص العلاقة الإشكاليّة بين الذات الإنسانيّة، وشبكة الأسباب التي تحكم العالم الطبيعي، وينطلق من افتراض مفاده أنّ أزمة الإرادة الحرّة لا تكمن في التعارض الظاهري بين الحتميّة والحريّة فحسب، بل في الطريقة التي نُفهم بها السببيّة ذاتها؛ فالسببيّة الصلبة، حين تُفهم بوصفها سلسلة مغلقة، لا تترك للذات الواعية سوى هامشٍ تفسيريّ ضيّق، وعندئذٍ يتحوّل القرار إلى نتيجة لا إلى فعل، وتصبح المسؤوليّة الأخلاقيّة إما عبئًا غير مبرّر، أو وهمًا أخلاقيًّا ضروريًّا للحياة الاجتماعيّة.

من هنا، يسعى البحث إلى إعادة بناء الإشكال من الداخل، لا عبر نفي القوانين الطبيعيّة أو إنكار السببيّة، إنّما إلى بناء قراءة متوازنة ترى أنّ أطروحة الفيلسوف الكندي ستورز ماكال (1930 – 2021/ Storrs Mccall) توفّر إمكانًا فلسفيًّا للدفاع عن القرار الإنسانيّ دون إنكار هيمنة القانون السببي، وفي الوقت نفسه تفتح نقاشًا نقديًّا حول حدود هذا الطرح الجدلي، وما إذا كان كافيًا لتبرير الحرية والمسؤوليّة الأخلاقيّة.

- Abstract:

This study addresses the problem of conscious decision-making in light of the tension between human awareness of choice and the possibility that it is merely an illusion resulting from the causal and deterministic structure governing the natural world. The research begins with the central question: Is it philosophically defensible to claim the existence of a conscious and responsible human decision in a world governed by natural laws? And if a person’s actions are conditioned by prior laws, in what sense can they be held ethically accountable for what they do?

The study represents a philosophical attempt to examine the problematic relationship between the human self and the network of causes that govern the natural world. It is based on the assumption that the crisis of free will does not lie solely in the apparent conflict between determinism and freedom, but in the way causality itself is understood and in the ontological conception of time within which we operate. Rigid causality, when understood as a closed, uninterruptible chain, leaves the self with only a narrow interpretive margin, in which decision becomes an outcome rather than an act, and moral responsibility becomes either an unjustified burden or a necessary ethical illusion for social life.

Accordingly, the study seeks to reconstruct the problem from within—not by denying natural laws or rejecting causality, nor by shielding consciousness from critique—but by building a balanced reading that sees Storrs McCall’s thesis as offering a philosophical basis for defending human decision-making without denying the dominance of causal law, while simultaneously opening a critical discussion regarding the limits of such a defense and whether it suffices to justify freedom and moral responsibility.

* باحث لبناني، يُعدّ أطروحة دكتوراه في الفلسفة في المعهد العالي للدكتوراه - الجامعة اللبنانيّة، بعنوان: "كوزمولوجيا الاحتمال والإرادة الحرّة بين ثنائيّة الضرورة السببيّة وحتميّة الصدفة عند ستورز ماكال"، بإشراف الأستاذ الدكتور حسن رضا. وهو متخصص في تدريس اللغة الإنكليزيّة والفلسفة لصفوف الشهادتين الرسميّتين المتوسطة والثانوية على مدى أكثر من عشرين عامًا؛ حائز شهادة الماستر البحثي في الفلسفة العامة والبحث العلمي من الجامعة اللبنانية، وشهادة الكفاءة- اختصاص الفلسفة من الجامعة اللبنانية- كلية التربية، وشهادة الإجازة التعليمية في قسم اللغة الإنكليزية وآدابها، والإجازة التعليمية في قسم الفلسفة من الجامعة اللبنانية. خاضع لدورات تدريبية مكثفة حول التكنولوجيا التربويّة والصعوبات التعليميّة؛ إضافة إلى مبادراته الاجتماعية والثقافيّة والبيئية.

* Hussein Afif Ghaddar: is a Lebanese researcher, currently preparing a doctoral dissertation in philosophy at the Lebanese University – Higher Institute for Doctoral Studies. His dissertation, entitled “The Cosmology of Probability and Free Will between Causal Necessity and the Determinism of Chance in Storrs McCall”, is supervised by Professor Dr. Hassan Reda. He specializes in teaching English and philosophy at the intermediate and secondary levels for the official national examinations, with over twenty years of teaching experience. He holds a research Master’s degree in General Philosophy and Scientific Research from the Lebanese University, a Professional Competency Certificate (Philosophy Specialization) from the Lebanese University – Faculty of Education, a Teaching Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature, and a Teaching Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, both from the Lebanese University. He has completed intensive training courses in educational technology and learning difficulties, in addition to his social, cultural, and environmental initiatives.
