- Abstract: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioral therapy–based counseling program in developing cognitive and regulatory digital awareness among secondary school students. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The main sample consisted of 81 secondary school students from Al-Jinan Private High School in North Lebanon, selected through purposive sampling.
The participants received a ten-session cognitive behavioral counseling program, and data were collected using a researcher-developed digital awareness scale measuring cognitive digital awareness and regulatory digital awareness and responsibility. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and paired-samples t test were used according to the normality of the difference scores, together with improvement percentages and effect-size estimates.
The findings revealed statistically significant posttest improvements in overall digital awareness and both dimensions, with a large effect on the total score, a moderate effect on cognitive digital awareness, and a moderate-to-large effect on regulatory digital awareness and responsibility.
The results provide preliminary evidence of the program’s effectiveness in promoting critical digital thinking and more responsible regulation of digital media use, while further controlled and follow-up studies are recommended.
