The Specter of Edward Said’s Thesis in a Central Eastern European Literary Corpus
(Selected Case Studies)

يعالج هذا البحث، من خلال نماذج مختارة، حضور صورة العرب والمسلمين في أعمال روائية لكتّاب من وسط أوروبا وشرقها، مبرزًا في الوقت نفسه، شبح أطروحة المفكر الفلسطيني – الأميركي إدوارد وديع سعيد (Edward Said/ 1935 – 2003م) عن النهج الاستشراقي الغربي، إذ النقد يمكن أن يكون ممكنًا دون أن يكون مرتبطًا بأجندات استعمارية.
يلحظ البحث أن مساهمات المفكرين والكتّاب من وسط أوروبا وشرقها، توفر منظورًا عميقًا حول العلاقة بين هذه المنطقة والشرق، ويمكن تمييز عدة اتجاهات رئيسة في هذه المساهمات، مثل: تبني موقف صادق ومتسامح تجاه الشرق، والالتزام بالدقة العلمية في تحليل الثقافات الشرقية وتمثيلها، والاعتراف النقدي بالصور النمطية التي تحيط بالمجتمعات الشرقية سواء أكانت مفترضة أم حقيقية. ويشير البحث إلى أن الإنتاج الفكري والأدبي للمؤلفين من وسط أوروبا، يتأرجح بين هذه الاتجاهات المختلفة، مما يعكس طيفًا واسعًا من المواقف والمناهج التحليلية، موضحًا أن هذه الأعمال تعكس مستويات متفاوتة من الفهم والانفتاح تجاه الشرق، حيث يمتاز بعضها بوعي نقدي عميق، في حين يقتصر البعض الآخر على التناول السطحي أو الرمزي. ومع ذلك، لا يمكن إنكار أن هذا التفاعل الأدبي يشكل جزءًا من حوار ثقافي مستمر يسهم في إعادة تقييم الصور النمطية، وإعادة تعريف العلاقة المتشابكة بين الثقافات الأوروبية والشرقية.

- Abstract: The contributions of intellectuals and writers from Central and Eastern Europe provide a profound perspective on the region’s relationship with the "Orient." Various approaches can be identified in these contributions, including a sincere and tolerant attitude toward the East, a commitment to scholarly precision in analyzing and representing Eastern cultures, and a critical acknowledgment of stereotypes, whether presumed or real, surrounding Eastern societies. The intellectual and literary output of Central European authors reflects a wide range of analytical stances, oscillating between these different tendencies. These literary works represent varying levels of understanding and openness toward the East. Some exhibit profound critical awareness, while others remain limited to superficial or metaphorical interpretations. Nonetheless, this literary engagement contributes to an ongoing cultural dialogue that challenges stereotypes and redefines the complex interplay between European and Eastern cultures.

* Márton Pál Iványi: PhD, resident in Budapest, Hungary, is a Doctor of Social Communication awarded by BCE Corvinus University. He has focused for more than a decade now on both modern and contemporary Central European and universal history, including their complex interactions with political economy and geopolitics. In the narrower field of literary traditions of Central Europe, he has published five peer-reviewed scientific articles describing particularly modern tendencies in this regard. Beyond his interdisciplinary expertise, he is also a professional partner of the Department of Arabic Studies at ELTE-BTK, having pursued studies in Damascus. Additionally, he is a prominent Hungarian researcher of the Maltese language.
