The Story of Joseph and His Brothers (Genesis 37:1–36)(1)
Abstract:
This study explores the dramatic and theatrical dimensions of the story of Joseph and his brothers in the Book of Genesis, reading it as a biblical narrative shaped by profound dramatic structure.
The story unfolds through conflict, jealousy, betrayal, slavery, imprisonment, revelation, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It examines the development of major characters-Joseph, Jacob, Judah, and the brothers-within a movement marked by tension, reversal, silence, and emotional intensity.
The study also highlights key symbols such as the robe, the pit, dreams, tears, and the table, interpreting them as theological signs of divine providence at work within human suffering.
Joseph appears not merely as an innocent victim, but as a witness to God’s power to bring salvation out of betrayal, life out of death, and communion out of wounded memory.
Thus, the Joseph narrative becomes a sacred stage where human tragedy is transformed into a revelation of mercy, forgiveness, and the hidden wisdom of God.
