Al-Mutayyabun and al-Ahlaf between Historiographical Methodology and Internal Conflict:
Readings and Reflections on the Records of Banu Abd Manaf

تنطلق هذه الدّراسة من مقدّمة منهجيّةٍ تعالج أدوات التّأريخ وطرائق قراءة الرّواية التّاريخيّة، بهدف الكشف عن البنية العميقة للأحداث وفهم السّياق الّذي أنتجها، قبل الانتقال إلى إعادة قراءة البنية الدَّاخليَّة لبيت عبد مناف في مرحلة ما قبل البعثة النَّبويَّة، من خلال تتّبع الصّراعات والتّحالفات الَّتي تشكّلت بين أبناء البيت الواحد، مرورًا بتأسيس حلف المُطَيَّبين وحزب الأحلاف كاستجابة لتوزُّع السُّلطة داخل قريش.
أما فرضيَّةٍ الدراسة فمفادها أنَّ المعارضة القويَّة وبخاصّة الأمويّة للنَّبيّ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ كانت تجسيدًا لتحوّلاتٍ داخل بيت عبد مناف نفسه، حيث مَثَّلَ النَّبيُّ ﷺ استمرارًا لإرث عبد المُطَّلب في مقابل إرث الأمويّين. ويكشفُ النَّصُّ كيف أنَّ البنية القبليّة الداخليّة وتوزيع الوظائف الاجتماعيَّة والاقتصاديَّة والسّياسيَّة في مَكَّة، أدت دورًا حاسمًا في تشكيل المواقف من الرّسالة المحمديَّة، مِمَّا يدعو إلى قراءة جديدة للمعارضة النبويّة بوصفها "صراعًا عائليًّا" مؤجَّجًا بنزاعات قديمة.

- Abstract:
This study opens with a methodological introduction addressing the tools of historiography and the methods of interpreting historical narratives, aiming to uncover the underlying structure of events and understand the context in which they emerged, before moving on to re-examine the internal structure of the House of Abd Manaf in the period preceding the Prophet’s mission, by tracing the conflicts and alliances that emerged among the members of the same household, culminating in the establishment of the Hilf al-Mutayyabin (Alliance of the Perfumed) and the Hilf al-Ahlaf (Alliance of the Confederates) as responses to the distribution of power within Quraysh.
The research proceeds from the premise that the strong opposition—particularly that of the Umayyads—to the Prophet Muhammad was an embodiment of transformations within the House of Abd Manaf itself, whereby the Prophet represented a continuation of the legacy of Abd al-Muttalib in contrast to the legacy of the Umayyads. The study reveals how the internal tribal structure and the distribution of social, economic, and political functions in Mecca played a decisive role in shaping attitudes toward the Muhammadan message, prompting a re-reading of the prophetic opposition as a “family conflict” fueled by old rivalries.

* Bahaa Mohammad Alaji: A Syrian researcher and independent writer in the fields of Islamic thought, Islamic philosophy, and social, political, and religious issues. He is an anesthesiologist and intensive care physician at the University Hospital in Dresden, Germany. He holds a Master’s degree in Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine from Tishreen University in Latakia, Syria. He has published two medical books in German aimed at helping foreign doctors succeed in the medical licensing exam in Germany. He is currently working on a short story collection in Arabic.
