The Geostrategic Importance of the Arctic for Russia, the United States and China

يعالج هذا البحث التحوّلات الجيوستراتيجيّة والاقتصاديّة في منطقة القطب الشمالي التي تشهد تنافسًا متزايدًا بين القوى العالميّة الرئيسة، ولا سيما روسيا والصين والولايات المتّحدة الأميركية، في ظل تداعيات التغيّر المناخي؛ فروسيا التي تمتلك الحصة الأكبر من الأراضي القطبيّة، تعمل على تعزيز سيطرتها من خلال تطوير البنية التحتيّة لطرق الشحن واستغلال الموارد الطبيعيّة، مثل النفط والغاز، وتستجيب الولايات المتّحدة للنشاط الروسي المتصاعد، وتأثيرات التغيّر المناخي بتعزيز وجودها العسكري في المنطقة، ساعيةً إلى حماية مصالحها الاستراتيجيّة. أما الصين فتعتمد مقاربة دبلوماسيّة واقتصاديّة، حيث ترى في المنطقة ممرًا تجاريًّا واعدًا عبر "طريق الحرير القطبي"، وتعمل على تعزيز شراكاتها مع الدول القطبيّة لضمان مصالحها. ومع استمرار ذوبان الجليد وفتح ممرات بحريّة جديدة، تزداد الأهميّة الاستراتيجيّة لمنطقة القطب الشمالي، مما يثير تساؤلات حول تداعيات هذا التنافس على الاستقرار الدولي، والسياسات الاقتصاديّة والعسكرية العالمية. وبالتالي، يهدف هذا البحث إلى تحليل طبيعة هذا التنافس، وتأثيره على التوازنات الجيوستراتيجيّة، مع استشراف التداعيات المحتملة على النظام الدولي في العقود المقبلة.

- Abstract: This research examines the geopolitical and economic transformations in the Arctic region, which is witnessing increasing competition among major global powers, particularly Russia, China, and the United States, amid the repercussions of climate change. Russia, which holds the largest share of Arctic territory, is strengthening its control by developing infrastructure for shipping routes and exploiting natural resources such as oil and gas. On the other hand, the United States is responding to heightened Russian activity and the impacts of climate change by bolstering its military presence in the region, aiming to protect its strategic interests. Meanwhile, China is adopting a diplomatic and economic approach, viewing the Arctic as a promising trade corridor through the "Polar Silk Road" and working to enhance partnerships with Arctic states to secure its interests. As ice continues to melt and new maritime routes open, the strategic importance of the Arctic region grows, raising questions about the implications of this competition for international stability and global economic and military policies. Consequently, this research aims to analyze the nature of this competition and its impact on geopolitical balances, while exploring potential effects on the international system in the coming decades.
