Covering the Commemoration of Ashura and the Martyrdom of Imam Husayn in the American Press: Case of the Washington Post

تعدّ عاشوراء حدثًا يختزن قيمًا إنسانية لأن رسالة الإمام الحسين بن علي (عليهما السلام) وأهل بيته وأصحابه، كان أساسها العدل الذي قامت عليه السماوات والأرض. وانطلاقًا من منطق العدل، فإن هذه الورقة البحثيّة تتفحص عَدل تغطية مراسم عاشوراء ومنها: ذكرى "الأربعون" في الصحافة الأميركية، وتحديدًا صحيفة "واشنطن بوست" التي تصدر من عاصمة الولايات المتحدة.
لذلك، تحلل هذه الورقة البحثيّة عددًا من المقالات التي وردت في "واشنطن بوست" لتبيان كيفية تغطية الصحيفة لمراسم إحياء المسلمين الشيعة في العراق لذكرى استشهاد الإمام الحسين (عليه السلام)، ولمعرفة كيف صوّرت الصحيفة حفيد النبي محمد (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم). وبناءً على هذا الهدف المشار إليه، فإن السؤال الذي تطرحه هذه الورقة: ما الاستراتيجية التي اعتمدتها "واشنطن بوست" لتغطية مراسم إحياء ذكرى عاشوراء والأربعين ولتصوير الإمام الحسين (عليه السلام)؟
وللإجابة عن السؤال وتحقيق الهدف، تعتمد هذه الورقة مقاربة تحليل الخطاب النقدي التي تقع ضمن استراتيجية البحث النوعي، خصوصًا أن التحليل يأخذ في الحسبان السياقات لتبيان الأجندة الخفية للخطاب.
وإذ تقع هذه الورقة البحثية ضمن بحوث التغطية الصحافية الغربية للإسلام والمسلمين، فإنها تقع حكمًا ضمن دراسات نقد الاستشراق الذي أساسه التصوير السلبي و/أو الخاطئ عن الإسلام والمسلمين.

- Abstract
Ashura is considered an event that embedded with human values because the message of Imam Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon them) and his purified family and companions was based on justice which is a heavenly value. Drawing on this universal value, this research paper examines the fairness of coverage of the commemoration of Ashura and Arbaeen in the American press, mainly the Washington Post, which is published from the capital of the United States.
In this vein, this research paper analyses a number of articles that published in The Washington Post to uncover how the newspaper presents the commemoration of Shiite Muslims in Iraq to the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) and hence to find out how the newspaper portrayed the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (May the blessings of Allah be upon him and his family). Drawing on this aforementioned aim, the question postulated in this paper is: What is the strategy adopted by the Washington Post to cover the commemoration ceremonies of Ashura and Arbaeen and how does the newspaper depict Imam Husayn (peace be upon him)?
In order to answer the question and achieve the aim, this paper adopts the critical discourse analysis approach under the umbrella of qualitative research strategy, and thus the analysis will take into consideration the contexts to support in revealing the hidden meanings and agenda of the newspaper's discourse.
As this research paper is in the line of the research relates to the coverage of the Islam and Muslims, mainly Shiite Muslims in the Western press, it is considered among the critical studies of Orientalism, which is based on the negative and/or incorrect representation of Islam and Muslims.
