- Abstract:
This study explores the historical evolution, theoretical foundations, and contemporary applications of systems thinking in the fields of art and architecture. Drawing on a comprehensive analysis of scholarly literature, theoretical treatises, and documented design projects, the study traces how concepts from systems theory, cybernetics, and complexity science have influenced creative disciplines from the mid-20th century to the present. It examines the integration of systems thinking into design processes, urban planning, sustainability strategies, and adaptive architectural solutions, highlighting the shift from static forms to dynamic, interconnected frameworks. Methodologically, the article employs a literature-based approach, synthesizing insights from architecture, design theory, ecological studies, and complexity research. The findings reveal that systems thinking fosters holistic, adaptive, and participatory approaches to creative practice, enabling responses to environmental challenges, technological change, and evolving human needs. Future research directions include deeper exploration of transdisciplinary collaborations, development of systems-based pedagogies in design education, and the advancement of computational and data-driven tools to enhance systems-oriented creativity.
