- Abstract:
Writing is a considerable language skill enabling individuals to verbalize their thoughts into concrete written reflections. This study delves into the scope of writing investigating first-year EFL Lebanese University collegians’ generation of cohesive and coherent essays. Throughout its experimentation process, the conducted research integrated cohesive devices as an instructing method intending to promote the learner’s production of a cohesive and coherent writing content. It employed a quantitative research type involving a true experimental design in an attempt to explore the impact of the dependent variable, cohesive devices, on augmenting students’ knowledge and application of cohesion and coherence. The study targeted a sample of 100 Lebanese University students who were exposed to the integrated treatment for 3 months within the course entitled “Techniques of Expression”. The reported findings confirmed the postulated hypotheses showing that instructing cohesive devices can effectively promote EFL collegians’ production of cohesive essays. However, the results asserted that this treatment can scarcely influence the students’ creation of coherent essays emphasizing the fact that this writing objective should be mastered and addressed at preliminary stages.
