المسامحة في قصيدتي ألكسندر بوب:
"مقالة حول النقد" و"من إيلويز إلى أبيلارد"
يبرز هذا البحث مدى الأهميّة التي يعلّقها الشاعر الإنكليزي ألكسندر بوب (Alexander Pope) على فعل المسامحة في قصيدتيه: "مقالة حول النقد" (An Essay on Criticism)، ومن "إيلويز إلى أبيلارد" (Eloisa to Abélard).
يحاول البحث فهم فعل المسامحة من خلال وجهة نظر المتصوّف الأميركي نيفيل غودارد (Neville Goddard) الذي يربط مسألة المسامحة بضرورة الوعي الذاتي والنسيان.
* ألكسندر بوب Alexander Pope)/ 1688— 1744): شاعر ومؤرخ ومترجم إنكليزي من القرن الثامن عشر، اشتهر بشعره الساخر، وبترجمته أعمال هوميروس، وباستخدام مقطع الشعر البطولي. نشر بوب في أيار 1709 الشعر الريفي في الجزء السادس من كتاب تونسون المسمّى منوعات شعرية. وهو ما حقق له شهرة فورية، وتبع ذلك "مقال عن النقد" نشر في أيار 1711. ونشر عمله "إيلويز إلى أبيلارد" في العام 1717.
In a culture which makes it easier for one to be judgmental than forgiving, it is deemed interesting to investigate the divinity that Alexander Pope attributes to the act of forgiveness, for such act appears as crucial today as it was three hundred years ago. Therefore, this research will look into the theme of forgiveness in Pope’s poems An Essay on Criticism and Eloisa to Abelard through the metaphysical lens of Neville Goddard.
In his didactic poem An Essay on Criticism, Pope writes, “To err is human, to forgive divine” (line 525). In this statement, Pope asserts, in the words of the speaker, that making mistakes is a common trait in humans while forgiveness is a divine characteristic. That is to say, when we forgive the mistakes of others, we would be practicing a unique and sublime teaching. Before we elaborate further on this statement, we need to bear in mind that the poem An Essay on Criticism was written in the Age of Enlightenment (c. 1660- c. 1770) which was marked by a profound faith in the powers of reason. In the context of this period, the poem aimed to expound the intellectual qualities that characterize a thoughtful and enlightened person. In other words, the statement under investigation seems to confirm Pope’s belief that forgiveness is indicative of wisdom in human beings and that an enlightened person is one who is naturally forgiving.
